Learning Objectives

Following completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • The attendee will be able to explain the role of technology in providing objective data during both evaluation and intervention phases and identify specific examples.

  • The attendee will be able to discuss how the integration of extrinsic feedback can improve patient outcomes by reducing cognitive demand and enhancing learning.

  • The attendee will be able to evaluate the use of various technologies in diagnosing and/or treating specific conditions and their impact on clinical decision-making.

  • The attendee will be able to identify key technologies in the management of dystussia to promote optimal cough capacity and flow measurements.

Will Riddick

Physical Therapist- Multispecialty Clinical Leader

Will Riddick PT, DPT, GCS is an outpatient physical therapist and the Outpatient Clinical Leader for the multispecialty program at Sheltering Arms Institute (SAI). He is passionate about serving a diverse patient population, with a specialized focus on limb amputations and geriatrics. In addition to his clinical role at SAI, Will serves as co-chair of the Amputation Care Special Interest Group within the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). He is also an adjunct faculty member in the Program for Physical Therapy at Old Dominion University and a regular guest lecturer at Virginia Commonwealth University. Will is actively involved in continuing education development through the Federal Section of the APTA and has previously published research and case studies on the physical therapy management of limb loss and limb difference. At SAI, Will leads an 8-week collaborative rehabilitation technology course for third-year physical therapy students from Virginia Commonwealth University. The course covers the full spectrum of rehabilitation technologies utilized across multiple disciplines at SAI. His clinical practice incorporates many of these technologies in both evaluative and intervention roles to benefit a wide range of patients.

Ali Holmes

Speech Advisor

Ali Holmes, M.S. CCC-SLP, CBIS, BCS-S is the SLP Advisor for Sheltering Arms Institute. As a member of the clinical science team, she supports the SLP department in mentoring and student programs, knowledge translation, clinical practice guideline use and program development. Prior to that position, she was Speech Pathology Manager at Encompass Health. She has provided diagnostic and therapeutic services to inpatient, day and outpatient adult populations, as well as managed a team of speech pathologists. In her career, she has developed outpatient voice and swallowing programs, and other specialty programs in stroke rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, tracheostomy management and Parkinson’s disease. Ali has presented to groups throughout the region and at the statewide and national conferences for Speech Pathology as well as rehab medicine. Ali graduated with BS and MS degrees from James Madison University and earned her board certification in swallowing and swallowing disorders in 2024.

Course Requirements

This online course is designed for allied health professionals (e.g., OT/OTA, PT/PTA, SLP, etc.). To participate in this course and receive credit, the participant must be a licensed clinician, complete the content of the course in its entirety, score ≥80% on the post-course assessment, and complete the course evaluation. Completion of this course will reward the participant with 0.40 contact hour(s)

*Sheltering Arms Institute is designated to provide certified CEU’s to physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language pathology clinicians licensed in the state of Virginia. Attendees of different disciplines or licensed in other states should verify with their licensing body if credit can be utilized toward regulatory requirements.
