Course Objectives

  • Provide cognitive reframing for what is traditionally viewed as “patient noncompliance” or “treatment resistance.”

  • Define efforts to partner with individuals to enhance their engagement in rehabilitation.

Mark Bender

Rehabilitation Psychologist

Mark Bender, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He is also a Rehabilitation Psychologist at the Sheltering Arms Institute. Dr. Bender has over 20 years of experience providing rehabilitation and neuropsychological services in a variety of rehabilitation settings and has been involved extensively in program development and evaluation projects. He has worked in acute inpatient, day rehabilitation, and transitional rehabilitation programs. He has published in the areas of traumatic brain injury, chronic pain, and neuropsychology. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Saint Louis University.

Course Requirements

This online course is designed for allied health professionals (e.g., OT/OTA, PT/PTA, SLP, etc.). To participate in this course and receive credit, the participant must be a licensed clinician, complete the content of the course in its entirety, score ≥80% on the post-course assessment, and complete the course evaluation. Completion of this course will reward the participant with 0.75 contact hour(s)

*Sheltering Arms Institute is designated to provide certified CEU’s to physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language pathology clinicians licensed in the state of Virginia. Attendees of different disciplines or licensed in other states should verify with their licensing body if credit can be utilized toward regulatory requirements.
